Congratulations from Paul Phillips Formal Wear and Limousine on your upcoming special day. We at Paul Phillips want to take part in your special day by giving you the worry free service that you deserve. For many of our customers, this is their first experience renting a tuxedo. It’s natural to have tuxedo and formal wear etiquette questions. Paul Phillips Formal Wear is happy to offer the following list of frequently asked questions.

General
Black Tie: An invitation that indicates a black tie event is a formal event requiring a tuxedo. This does not mean you are required to wear a black tie and many colors and styles are acceptable and encouraged to show your personal style.

Measuring: Accurate measurements are the key to looking your best in your tuxedo. The following are guides to taking measurements for your tuxedo rental.We also recommend trying on a tuxedo jacket when possible. When you find a jacket that fits you well, place your order using those measurements. As a guide, there is traditionally a 6" difference between the average male chest and waist (i.e. a 42" chest or jacket will usually have a 36" waist).

  • Neck- measure and add 1/2” for your size;
  • Sleeve length- measure from center of collar and through back and arm to crease in wrist;
  • Chest- measure under arms with arms at sides for underarm measurement, over top of muscle and deduct 6” for coat size; put hand between body and measuring tape to allow for comfort and movement;
  • Waist- measure snuggly around waist at navel;
  • Adjustable waist- most tuxedo trousers allow you to adjust the waist size about 2½ inches;
  • Cuff/hem- tuxedo trousers should never be tailored with a cuff; they should always have a straight hem;
  • Hip- measure at largest point and deduct eight inches for proper waist size;
  • Outseam- top of pant waist down to mid shoe above heel;

Style and finishing

  • Lapels: We offer classic lapel styles that can be worn to the most exclusive black tie event. Our lapel styles are as appropriate to wear now as they were fifty years ago. Your lapel style is merely a personal preference. If you are having trouble choosing, keep in mind that the notched lapel is the most popular.
  • Single or double breasted jacket: A double breasted jacket should be buttoned at all times to look appropriate and are most flattering on tall, slender gentlemen. A single breasted jacket may left opened for higher comfort levels. Both considered classic styles.
  • Poly/cotton or cotton tuxedo shirt: A 100% cotton shirt is most comfortable and attractive and highly recommended. Our poly/cotton blend tuxedo shirts are wrinkle resistant and machine washable.
  • Cufflinks and studs: We recommend finishing your tuxedo look with a classic cufflink and stud set to make your tuxedo look its best. Paul Phillips offers a wide range for any style or budget.
  • Patent leather shoes: Patent leather shoes are inexpensive and look the best with a tuxedo.
